Doug Albers Sr. is an accomplished entrepreneur and philanthropist with more than 40 years of experience as a business owner. Based in Kansas City, Missouri, Doug is deeply invested in his community.
Doug Albers Sr. opened an independent pharmacy during the summer of 1976, the year before he completed his studies at pharmacy school. After three decades spearheading the pharmacy’s growth, in 2008 Doug sold it to two of his employees who have since grown the business even further. Each day they continue to provide Albers Medical Pharmacy patients with superior customer service and a knowledgeable, friendly staff. These values and the importance of earning trust have always been important to Doug Albers Sr.
Doug Albers Sr. transitioned away from his first venture in large part to join his colleague, friend, and former pharmacy school classmate, Kermit Fendler, at a pharmacy benefit management company in which Doug had invested in at its inception. Doug Albers became the firm’s Executive Vice President of Trade Relations, supervising contracting for all vendors. These spanned a wide variety of major retailers, including Walgreens, CVS, Target, and Walmart. Doug also managed relationships with thousands of independent pharmacies nationwide. Doug served in this capacity until the end of 2014, when the company was acquired. After this sale, Doug opted to retire and look towards exploring new opportunities.
Doug Albers Sr. is now an investor partner with MRx Ventures. The company is rolling out an innovative new software platform with a varied suite of applications. He is also a partner in Tria Health, which focuses on resolving the high costs and health risks associated with the mismanagement of medication. Tria Health has provided personalized pharmacy guidance to help companies, ACOs and health plans reduce their medical costs and improve their patients outcomes.
Beyond the pharmaceuticals space, however, Doug Albers Sr. is devoting the majority of his time to GreatLifeKC Golf.
He is one of the partners that own, operate, and/or manage a large portfolio of both public and private golf courses. Fourteen of these facilities are located in the Kansas City region on both sides of the state line. GreatLifeKC also enjoys a presence in Wichita, with Tallgrass Country Club, in the Lake of the Ozarks, with Osage National. GreatLifeKC believes in lifelong fitness and innovation in the golf game. The GreatlLifeKC team is committed to making a difference in the lives of children, families and charitable organizations.
Doug Albers Sr. provides critical resources through his hands-on leadership. He project manages the vast improvements that GreatLifeKC implements at their facilities, as well as conducting quarterly audits of each course and fitness center to guarantee every property meets their standards for excellence. A long-time golfer himself, Doug enjoys approaching the game from more than just a player’s perspective. His work has afforded him the opportunity to grow his expertise of not only the golfing component of the business, but expand into new areas as well. These include the service industry, fitness sales and management, and marketing.
Outside of the workplace, Doug is passionate about serving his community and giving back. An ardent philanthropist, he supports a number of important causes. Doug presently funds a scholarship to the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Pharmacy School, from which he earned a pharmacy degree. Doug Albers Sr. also holds a Bachelor of Science from Kansas State University.
